Dave Cockrum: Birthday Memories

Gone seven years now, my friend Dave would have been 70 today. I think of him often--how he helped me so generously when I was just starting out as a writer. He was everything a comic artist should be. My walls are festooned with his work; my children grew up reciting his creations by heart.

Favorite memories? There are too many. I think his was the time we were driving around and I picked a fight with a van-full of Kappa Douches at an ICON convention. Mine was when he and his wife Paty attended my seven-year-old's birthday party and he drew superheroes for all the kids. And then they took them home and colored them in.

I look forward to honoring my pal's memory early next year when Aardwolf Publishing publishes Dave's final, never-before-published issue of The Futurians.

Ha, ha ha! Harlan is such a hoot.
And by far the best experience I've ever had at an author speaking event.
Giants walked the earth indeed.

I was a comics fan from 75 to 80. I was thrilled to find Cockrum's xmen work then. like many, i then also fell in love with John Byrne. but, i have always wanted to say this: Byrne lacked something, perhaps emotionality, or dynamism. his work was technically great, and he usually got the help of great inkers, but when i compare my emotional responses to the two, Dave does better. here's an analogy for you: cockrum=egon schiele, byrne=alfons mucha. get it? I just want to be able to say that i can see both the kirby-like dynamism of cockrum, and the quirky (ditkoish?) unconventionality of his characters. I am also reminded of David Hargrave, a game creator (arduin), who was also a vet-I suspect that life experience informed their work in a special way. Im glad you got to know mr. cockrum, and i look forward to reading more of your blogging (Ill even try to keep reading if you offend me, as you are pretty much putting it out there that you might. quoting ellison and kahane-ya think ya just might be a little opinionated? nah.
